Seed was launched in May 2015, when a group gathered together with our Founder, John Beckett, to create a space for people to develop ideas and initiatives that more fully embodied the good news of Jesus beyond the walls of the church.
We wanted to explore what this embodiment of faith might look like beyond the more traditionally accepted sectors for Christian work like education, health and justice. What might it look like for a Christian in fashion, or finance, or property, or architecture to more fully align their lives with God’s purposes?
We were finding lots of Christians who were frustrated that their faith felt disengaged from the world and disconnected from their life. Many had a deep sense that a life following Jesus should make a difference in the world but their current experience was falling short of that expectation.
Most were content enough at church, but few were satisfied that church was providing them with models that helped them think through how they could most effectively serve God beyond the walls of the church. Most models and teaching focus on how they should behave at work or in the community. Some stretched to consider the way they should work or what they should say to make the most of opportunities to tell people about Jesus in their workplace or community. But few models, if any, helped them to think through what was the purpose of their work. What was it they were trying to achieve through their work, or through their involvement in a particular community or culture. And how did that connect with God’s purposes for them and for the world?
There were many great Christian leaders and organisations before us who were doing the difficult work of trying to work out what whole-of-life discipleship looks like. We wanted to continue their legacy but we also wanted to take it a step further. We wanted to be a community of practice. We committed ourselves to move beyond thinking about how we best engage with society and culture, and to start helping people design and create the businesses, products and services that embody and demonstrate what living as part of God’s new creation looks like.
Our belief is that what God wants from people in response to the good news of Jesus is a way of life, not a way of thinking. The way we think is extremely important, but primarily because it shapes the way we live. We wanted to help people and organisations to imagine, design and create a different future and be agents for positive change in the communities, workplaces and cultures where God has placed them.
So Seed was created. Through thought leadership, training, and the development of a community with the capacity to help incubate real initiatives, we are seeking to help Christian individuals and organisations to discover their God given purpose, learn to align their own lives with that purpose, then create positive change in the world that also aligns with that purpose.
Seed is a community of people who want to wrestle, discover, imagine and create together.
We would love you to join us.
